Westfield Secondary School

Our Duke of Edinburgh Year 9 team were out in the beautiful Peak District last weekend on a practice expedition for their Bronze Award. Set with their full rucksacks, maps and compasses they set off from Darley Dale on Friday and walked 10km to Birchover, where they set up camp for the night. Students had to pitch their own tents, then cooked and ate their hot meal of the day (a lot of pasta was consumed). There were some lovely peacocks at the campsite that decided it was time to wake up on Saturday morning at 5am! After breakfast and then packing up camp the group set off and walked to their next destination – Bakewell. Here students had a little time to indulge in a bit of shopping and some well-deserved sweet treats. It rained a little at times but all in all, they were very lucky with the weather and the sun made lots of appearances. It's wonderful to see how students grow, develop and learn life-long skills such as confidence, resilience and resourcefulness while taking part in their Duke of Edinburgh journey.

Westfield's language and PE departments joined together to create an unforgettable action-packed school trip for some of our students from Years 7-9 to the fantastic city of Barcelona at the end of May.Our footballers had training sessions and played matches against local teams. We were so proud as our teams stayed focused, displayed great determination along with showing their great work ethic and commitment which was clear from the first whistle to the last. While the PE students were busy on the football pitch, our language students experienced a very different side of Barcelona and visited lots of attractions which the cultural city has to offer, including a guided tour of the beautiful Gothic Quarter, experienced a paella cooking demonstration and visited Casa Batlló, which was designed by the architect Gaudi and is considered one of his masterpieces. Both groups joined together for visits to the magnificent Camp Nou Museum at Barcelona FC's stadium and the world famous Sagrada Familia church, which after 143 years of construction is due to be completed in 2026. The students also had a fantastic fun day at a waterpark and even managed to fit in tenpin bowling and a pizza night!
