Overview

Introduction

The aims and objectives of this qualification are to enable students to:

  • develop a range of skills through involvement in sport and physical activity in different contexts and roles
  • develop the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations
  • gain a better understanding of the complexity of different areas of sport and the sports industry
  • increase awareness of different ways to stay involved in sport and physical activity and of different careers and roles within sport

Curriculum

Course content

R185: Performance and leadership in sport activities

  • Developing skills in a team and individual sport including planning drills to improve performance.
  • Plan, risk assess, deliver and evaluate a 30 minute session of the student's choice.

R187 : Increasing awareness of outdoor adventurous activities (OAA)

  • Research different provision of OAA and national governing bodies, safety equipment, technologies and clothing used in the activities.
  • Plan, risk assess and evaluate an OAA session.

R184: Contemporary issues in sport

Exam based unit looking at user groups, barriers, solutions, popularity, emerging sports, sporting values, Olympic and Paralympic values, initiative, national governing bodies, hosting major events and technology.

Skills and requirements

Skills required

  • A passion for physical activity.
  • An interest in leading and OAA.
  • Good literacy and ICT skills.
  • Able to work independently to overcome challenges whether practically or in theory.
  • Able to work in a team supporting others.
  • Good communication including listening, oral and written communication.
  • An understanding of sport and how this can link to theory topics.

Beyond the classroom

Future pathways

Students can progress from this qualification to:

  • vocational courses such as the BTEC Nationals in sport and sport and exercise sciences
  • apprenticeships and other training
  • employment in a related sector
