School Newsletter
06.03.2026
Good afternoon,
It has been another busy and productive week in school. Our Year 11 students have been completing their mock examinations, which have been running smoothly throughout the week and will continue into next week. We are very proud of the focus and determination students have shown during this important period and wish them every success as they complete the remaining exams.
Next week we look forward to welcoming Year 10 parents and carers into school for the Year 10 Parents’ Evening. This will be a valuable opportunity to discuss students’ progress, celebrate their achievements and talk about the next steps as they continue their GCSE courses.
Meanwhile, excitement is building as final rehearsals for our production of Matilda are now underway. The cast and crew have been working incredibly hard and everything is coming together brilliantly. It promises to be an amazing show and we cannot wait to share it with you.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
Information for Parents/Carers of all years
Social Media Trend
You may be aware from your child and from the media that the social media trend seeking to organise anti-social behaviour and ‘fights’ between local schools continues.
These messages continue to be shared across many platforms. As a school, we are working closely with all the appropriate authorities to monitor the situation; every other secondary school in the area is doing likewise.
I have spoken to all our children and very clearly outlined our expectations: I know you will have done the same. We expect our students to refrain from engaging in any of this activity and to continue to act in line with our school values. Any student misusing social media to share or promote posts like these will face the severest of sanctions and the police would likewise be involved.
As a school, we will continue to liaise closely with others locally so that together we can prevent this becoming anything more than a social media trend.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
GCSE Spanish and German Speaking Exams
The GCSE Spanish and German speaking exams will take place week commencing 20 April 2026. This exam is worth 25% of the overall GCSE grade.
Students will be notified of their speaking exam time by their class teacher. These times will also be displayed on the MFL corridor.
Students should start revising now to ensure that they are thoroughly prepared for their exam. The exam consists of a role play, read aloud task, describe a photo task and unprepared conversations. Students have been given revision resources to support them, but these are also available on Teams.
It is paramount that students arrive on time to their exam time on their allotted day. Any issues with timetabling then please inform us as soon as possible.
Matilda The Musical
Westfield School presents Tim Minchin's Tony Award winning musical 'Matilda Jr'. Performed by our very own Westfield students and inspired by the beloved Roald Dahl book and film adaptation.
Matilda is the story of an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.
Join us as our Westfield students perform their version of the show.

Sheffield Youth Cabinet
The Sheffield Youth Cabinet enables young people to have a say on issues that matter to them and to influence decision making at a local, regional and national level. Sheffield Youth Cabinet members represent the voice, views and opinions of their peers in their local areas.
The Sheffield Youth Cabinet is made up of elected members from the Sheffield Youth Council and Sheffield UK Youth Parliament. The group meet monthly to drive forward and coordinate their campaigns and work in campaign action groups. Their work is voluntary, and they are all passionate about making Sheffield and the UK a better and fairer place for young people.
Four students from Westfield put themselves forward to be elected to the cabinet, each writing a manifesto for change and indicating their priorities. Earlier in February all the manifestos for the candidates for Sheffield South East were shared with our young people in preparation for voting. Sheffield Council delivered an official voting box to school and along with official voting slips, all our students were offered the chance to choose a candidate. On Thursday 5th February voting took place and students placed their ballot paper into the box.
On Thursday 26th February the results were announced at special event at Sheffield United Pavillion. We are thrilled to announce that Ollie and Elias in Year 7 were elected. A special mention to Reuben Year 9 and Millie Year 8 for putting themselves forward and working hard on their manifestos which is very courageous.
Y7 BAE Roadshow
On Monday morning Westfield’s Year 7 students watched the BAE Roadshow in school. Students watched a theatrical STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) performance all about materials science provided by BAE Systems (Royal Navy, and the Royal Air Force). The STEM roadshow was delivered by education specialists hi-impact and Altru. The roadshow explored ‘The Material World’, looking at different materials, their atom structure and metal properties in a fun and engaging way.
Year 9 Building My Skills Programme
Last Wednesday, Year 9 were delivered an informative talk from Megan from Esh Construction company. National Careers Week: 2nd -7Th March
In whole school assembly this week students will be encouraged to think about ‘what a career is?’ and their own individual interests and areas of school in which they excel and which they may wish to pursue in the future. Students are encouraged to think about these things regularly, when they take part in questionnaires about their own personal development during form time ASPIRE sessions. Form tutors will lead students through a series of sessions linked to National Careers Week. Parents and carers are encouraged to ask children about this and together spend time on UNIFROG to research careers, jobs and future opportunities. More information can be found at: https://nationalcareersweek.com/
PSHE
As you will already be aware as part of Westfield School’s wider curriculum, we promote personal wellbeing through our comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. Our PSHE lessons help to ensure that our young people possess the knowledge, understanding, strategies and practical skills required to be able to enjoy safe, healthy, productive lives and also to help them to meet their full potential.
Over this half-term students in Years 7 – 10 will be focussing on the careers and finance aspects of this programme of study. You will see from the table below that our curriculum is carefully arranged to ensure that relevant information is retaught at the appropriate developmental stages, this helps our students to have an in depth understanding of the key topics.

Our PSHE programme is taught throughout the school and is monitored and reviewed regularly as part of our wider commitment to ensuring that your child receives the best education available. As a result of this student-centred approach our PSHE lessons utilise recognised best practise and the lessons listed above are developed using resources provided by the PSHE Association, the Bank of England’s ‘Money and Me’ programme, Nationwide and the Money Saving Expert. All PSHE teaching takes place in a safe learning environment and is underpinned by both the ethos of Chorus Trust “Outstanding achievement for all” and Westfield School’s own focus on students being “Ready, Respectful and Safe”.
As always, we value any feedback and welcome any questions that you may have. Mr Skinner, Subject Leader for PSHE, can be contacted at CSkinner@chorustrust.org
Good news stories
Year 7 Netball League Meet at Tapton
On Wednesday, our Year 7 netball team travelled to Tapton School to take part in an exciting netball league meet, where they competed in three matches. The girls represented the school brilliantly, showing great teamwork, determination and enthusiasm.
Two of the matches were very closely contested, with the team narrowly losing both games by just two goals. Despite the tight scorelines, the players demonstrated fantastic skill and resilience, keeping the matches competitive right until the final whistle.
The highlight of the event was an outstanding performance in their third match, where the team secured a convincing 12–0 victory. The girls worked superbly together on court, moving the ball confidently and defending strongly.
The team played some excellent netball, supported one another brilliantly, and most importantly had a great time representing the school. Well done to all involved!
Year 7 Boys Football
The Year 7 Boys’ football team travelled to High Storrs on Tuesday evening to compete in the Sheffield Cup semi-final.
Facing a strong and well-organised High Storrs side, Westfield conceded an early goal, and two impressive individual performances from the opposition helped them build a commanding lead by half-time.
Despite the setback, the Westfield boys demonstrated excellent resilience and character, continuing to battle and give their all right up to the final whistle. Although the match ended in a heavy defeat, the team’s determination and effort never wavered.
Oliver and Tommy delivered standout performances, showing outstanding grit, commitment, and work rate throughout the entire game.
Mini Gymnastics Event
Following the recent Mini Gymnastics event, several of the students involved from Waterthorpe Nursery Infants School wrote letters to Mr Francis thanking the Sports Leaders and the School for allowing them to attend the festival. The letters explained how amazing the Sports Leaders were during the event, how they all felt welcomed and helped throughout, as well as highlighting what they enjoy the most about the festival…mainly getting a chance to use our trampolines!
Thank you to Mrs Appleby, the schools Headteacher, the wonderful staff at Waterthorpe for their consistent involvement in the festivals, but most importantly the young people of Waterthorpe for their kind words.
