    22.05.26

    Good afternoon,

As we reach the end of another busy and successful half term, today has been a particularly memorable one in our school community. This afternoon, we said goodbye to our Year 11 students as they begin their study leave and prepare for the next stage of their GCSE examinations. During our Leavers’ Assembly, we shared many wonderful memories, celebrated their achievements, and reflected on the positive contribution this year group has made to school life over the past five years. We are incredibly proud of every one of them and wish them every success in the weeks ahead.

Today also marks the end of term for all students and staff. Thank you for your continued support throughout what has been another productive and rewarding half term. We hope that everyone enjoys a restful and enjoyable break, and we look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday 1st June.

Information for Parents/Carers of all years

    Punctuality to School

We have been reviewing punctuality to school and to lessons this half term. Our registers show that there are a significant number of minutes lost to lateness in the mornings and to lessons. For this reason, we have reviewed our approach to punctuality and will be asking staff to record this carefully. We will also be monitoring toilet visits more closely so that we can communicate with you as parents and carers if we start to see a pattern. This will not affect toilet passes but we will be asking students to use the toilets at break and lunchtime rather than in between lessons. More details will follow.

Bring a Water Bottle to School

We encourage all children to bring a clearly labelled water bottle to school each day.

Although we have water fountains available around the school, many children prefer not to use them unless they have their own bottle to refill. Having a personal water bottle ensures that pupils can access drinking water easily and comfortably whenever they need it.

Thank you for your support in helping our pupils stay healthy, hydrated, and ready to learn.

    Year 10 Work Experience

Congratulations to all the students who have had successful work experience placements, the careers team, form tutors, and year team have had so many wonderful conversations with employers about our students, we are very proud of them. We can’t wait to hear about their experience, please remind students to bring their booklet back on Monday 1st June to keep in school and upload onto UNIFROG. Thank you to all parents and carers for your support with this and to the many family members and friends who have supported the placements – Mrs Halliday.

    Good news stories

    Dortmund Trip

72 students and 9 staff set off bright and early on Wednesday morning for an exciting five-day trip to Dortmund, Germany. The visit combines both languages and sport, giving students the opportunity to develop their confidence, teamwork and cultural understanding outside the classroom.

Throughout the trip, students will take part in a wide variety of activities, including sports sessions, cultural visits and opportunities to practise their German in real-life situations. Experiences such as these help students build independence, create lasting memories and strengthen friendships with their peers.

We look forward to sharing more updates and photographs from what promises to be a fantastic and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

    Q&A with Mellors

15 students volunteered to be part of a feedback session with the area manager for Mellors and our own catering manager. The students were confident and articulate in their feedback, they have constructive feedback on food items, prices but also offered suggestions. They asked many questions and listening carefully to the feedback, they also were helped to understand the financial and health implications of items on the menu. The students were an absolute credit to us as a school and you as parents, changes may well come about due to their feedback. A very well done to our Yr 7-9 students.

    Sporting Success

It has been a landmark year for Beau in Year 9, whose dedication to orienteering is yielding incredible results both at home and across the Channel. From podium finishes in Europe to elite training selections, her trajectory in the sport is one to watch.

Back in March, Beau donned the England kit to compete in a high-stakes international meet in France. Facing off against formidable teams from France, Luxembourg, and Belgium, Beau proved she belongs among the elite.

    • Individual Success: Beau secured a stellar 5th place overall in a deep and highly competitive field.
    • Team Triumph: The England Junior and Senior teams dominated the event.
    • A Proud Moment: In a testament to her performance and team spirit, Beau was chosen to lift the Junior Trophyon behalf of the winning England squad.

The momentum continues as Beau has been invited to attend the prestigious Junior Regional Orienteering Squad (JROS) training camp in Scotland. This is a significant milestone in any young navigator's career.

Beau will join the top 24 boys and girls in the UK for a week of intensive, high-level training. This camp is a renowned stepping stone; many participants go on to represent Great Britain on the world stage.

"She was so excited to be selected for this camp... the training is by some of the best orienteering coaches, many of whom have represented Great Britain themselves."

The rugged, technical terrain of the Scottish Highlands will provide the perfect backdrop for Beau to sharpen her skills. Under the guidance of world-class coaches, this "week of intensity" promises to be a defining chapter in what is already a standout season.

Congratulations, Beau, on your incredible achievements so far this year!

Honouring Elemie Through Football and Friendship

This weekend, students from Westfield and several other local schools came together to take part in a special charity football tournament held in memory of former Westfield student, Elemie Wainwright.

Elemie sadly passed away last year following a car accident, but her kindness, spirit and positive impact continue to bring people together.

The tournament welcomed pupils from Westfield, Birley, Eckington, Handsworth Grange and Outwood, with an incredible 112 young people taking part. Every single student represented themselves and their schools with outstanding maturity, respect and sportsmanship.

Elemie’s mum shared how proud she was of all the participants, describing them as “simply amazing” and saying they were a true credit to themselves and their schools. The event was a touching reminder of the lasting influence Elemie has had on so many young people, inspiring friendships, teamwork and a shared love of sport.

A special mention must go to Kaine, Zac, Ollie, Sonny and Arnie, who organised the entire tournament themselves. Their dedication, effort and commitment were remarkable, and they should be extremely proud of what they achieved.

We are incredibly proud of all the students who took part and helped make the day such a meaningful and memorable occasion. Their compassion, teamwork and respect were a wonderful reflection of the values we strive to uphold at Westfield.

Thank you to Elemie’s family for allowing us to share this special event, and to everyone who contributed to such a fitting tribute to Elemie’s memory.
