Water safety notice from South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service

With several schools in our area located near bodies of water, we're reaching out to partner with you in protecting children's safety. Whether during winter when ice forms or in warmer months when swimming seems inviting, bodies of open water can pose serious risks to young people.

We kindly ask all parents/carers to have a crucial conversation with their children about water safety. Please discuss the following safety information with your family to help prevent accidents and ensure everyone stays safe around water throughout the year.

  • Attempting to walk on frozen lakes, canals and reservoirs is dangerous and can be fatal.
  • Whilst it may be tempting to walk on frozen water, the ice could be unstable and can easily break.
  • The temperature of the water is so cold that it can take your breath away which can lead to panic and result in drowning.
  • Even during the summer months, water is still cold beneath the surface so entering the water can result in cold water shock.
  • The RNLI's "Float to Live" advice is to resist the instinct to swim hard to safety if you find yourself unexpectedly in the water. Instead, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and float. Tilt your head back with ears submerged, relax, and control your breathing. Use your hands to help you stay afloat and call for help or swim to safety if possible.

GOOD NEWS STORIES

On Monday our Y11 PE GCSE students completed their cross-country race against Meadowhead School to secure another practical grade towards their course and also on Monday, our Y10 basketball team played against Birley School. They played well and were very enthusiastic, although they unfortunately lost the game.

On Tuesday our Y9 football team secured a draw against Bradfield School with a score of 3-3. The boys played in different positions and displayed true team spirit.

Our Y8 netball team played against King Egbert School and Newfield School this week. It was a fantastic game, and they scored a total of 7 points; it wasn’t enough for a win but they did us proud.

Class 8Y3 completed some outstanding work in their Computing lesson on Tuesday while creating their end of topic presentations. They, without exception, worked brilliantly in their groups with excellent examples of teamwork and communication shown throughout the lesson.

Congratulations to five of our students who have been successfully inducted into Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders (SAYL). They have undertaken key roles in a national Badminton Tournament for the British Universities Colleges Sports (BUCS) University finals in Sheffield, assisting with scoring, officiating and helping to run the event. They also assisted in the BUCS University Athletics Championships at the English Institute of Sport over the weekend. They are a credit to themselves and our school!
